Electric Parking Brake (EPB)
A Comparison of Conventional and Electric Parking Brakes
A conventional parking brake, or mechanical parking brake, is operated by a parking brake lever or a foot pedal. The operating force is transmitted mechanically to the rear brakes via cables.
In contrast, an electric parking brake (EPB) is operated via a switch. An electronically controlled actuator generates the required clamping force. This allows the parking brake to be integrated into other vehicle systems and—depending on the vehicle’s equipment—can support additional functions such as automatic engagement and release or Auto Hold.
In the electric cable-operated parking brake, an electromechanical cable unit replaces the traditional parking brake lever. The actuator electrically tensions the existing parking brake cables, thereby engaging the parking brake on the rear wheels.
Electromechanical parking brake actuator
The electromechanical actuator is a key component of the electric parking brake. It converts the electrical signals from the control module into mechanical motion, thereby generating the clamping force required to securely hold the vehicle in place when it is stationary. Depending on the vehicle design, such an actuator can be used in various EPB systems. The parking brake is engaged precisely and reliably via the engine, transmission, and mechanical power transmission.
In the so-called “motor-on-caliper” system, each rear brake caliper is equipped with its own electric motor and gearbox. The actuator drives a spindle that moves the brake piston, thereby pressing the brake pads against the brake rotor. This generates the required clamping force directly at the wheel brake.
The electric parking brake is activated via a switch inside the vehicle. The control module processes the driver’s command and then activates the electric actuators to keep the vehicle safely stationary.
