Engine management
Throttle valves
Function
The throttle valve regulates the air or mixture supply to the combustion engine. Depending on the engine design, it serves different purposes.
In gasoline engines, the speed and power output are regulated by the correct mixture of fresh air or mixture supply.
Diesel engines do not actually require a throttle valve. In modern self-igniting engines, throttling the intake air volume allows precise control of exhaust gas recirculation and prevents the engine from “shuddering” when it is switched off.

The throttle valve is installed in the intake tract of the combustion engine and, depending on the degree of opening, allows more or less fresh air or air-fuel mixture, e.g., carburetor engines, to flow into the cylinders.
In older vehicles, the throttle valve is directly connected to the accelerator pedal. Here, it is operated purely mechanically via a cable.
For newer vehicles, we offer various actuation options in the at autoteile germany engine management range:
Electric motor throttle valves
In electric throttle valves, the position of the throttle valves is regulated mechanically via the throttle cable. The throttle valve’s electronics transmit the position of the throttle valve to the engine control unit in the form of an electrical signal. This information is compared with other current data from various engine management sensors. The engine control unit continuously calculates the throttle valve position that is optimal for fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. It sends this information back to the throttle valve in the form of an electrical control signal. There, the fine adjustment of the throttle valve position is initiated with the aid of a servomotor.

Electronic throttle valves have no direct connection to the accelerator pedal. The power requirement is detected by an electronic accelerator pedal, e.g. at10104 (OE comparison number 220 300 00 04).
The engine management system constantly compares this signal with all other available data from the engine sensors. This is used to calculate the optimum throttle valve position. The electronic throttle valve is controlled exclusively by a servomotor based on the control signal from the engine management system.
