Function of the multi-plate clutch pump in an all-wheel-drive system
The multi-plate clutch pump (also known as the Haldex pump) is the central drive component of the electrohydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch in modern all-wheel-drive vehicles. It builds up the necessary hydraulic pressure to press the multi-plate packs together continuously, thereby transferring the drive torque to the required axle as needed—ranging from slight slip compensation to nearly complete power transfer under extreme conditions.
Common causes of failure include clogging due to wear and oil degradation, porous or damaged filter media, leaky seals on the filter housing, and filter changes performed too late during maintenance. The consequences range from reduced oil pressure and imprecise clutch engagement to secondary damage to the pump or the entire all-wheel-drive system.
Pump and Hydraulic Filter as a System
Note on the hydraulic filter: The hydraulic filter for the multi-plate clutch is located directly on the pump; it keeps the hydraulic oil free of contaminants and wear particles, thereby significantly contributing to the service life of the pump and the entire clutch assembly.
