The air duct with an integrated mass airflow sensor (also known as the intake duct with MAF sensor) combines two key functions of the engine intake system into a single component: It guides the intake air from the air filter to the engine in a flow-optimized manner while simultaneously and precisely measuring the actual mass of air drawn in using the hot-film measurement principle. It transmits these measurements in real time to the engine control unit, which uses them to precisely adjust fuel injection—ensuring efficient combustion, low emissions, and optimal engine performance.
Common causes of failure include leaks in the air duct due to cracks or porous joints—which allow outside air to be drawn in and distort measurement accuracy—as well as contamination or deposits on the sensor element, a defect in the sensor electronics, damaged connectors, and mechanical damage to the plastic housing caused by vibration or improper installation. Even excessively oiled sports air filters can impair the sensitive measuring element due to excess oil in the intake tract. The consequences range from rough idling and loss of power to increased fuel consumption, as well as persistent error codes in the engine control unit or consequential damage to the engine caused by an improperly adjusted fuel-air mixture.
Integrated design and replacement of the entire unit
Since the mass air flow sensor is permanently integrated into the air duct, it is not possible to replace the sensor alone—if it malfunctions, the entire unit, consisting of the air duct and the mass air flow sensor, must always be replaced.
