Function of the Mechatronics Circuit Board in an Automatic Transmission
The mechatronics circuit board (also known as the transmission control unit or TCU board) is the electronic heart of the mechatronics unit in modern automatic transmissions. It is located directly inside the transmission and processes signals from speed, temperature, and pressure sensors in real time to precisely control the solenoid valves for shifting, clutch pressure, and torque converter bypass—ensuring optimally coordinated interaction between the engine and transmission in every driving situation.
Because the printed circuit board operates continuously in the transmission’s oil bath and is subjected to high thermal and electrical stresses, it is one of the mechatronic components most prone to wear. Typical causes of failure include corrosion or oxidation of solder joints and contacts due to moisture ingress, cracks in the circuit trace structure caused by thermal cycling, defective components such as capacitors or transistors, and damaged connectors to the wiring harness. Deposits from worn-out transmission oil can also impair contact quality.
The consequences range from rough or jerky shifting and sporadic error messages to a emergency mode with limited drivability or a complete failure of the automatic transmission.
